Supportive Therapy

Our team of caring professionals are committed to helping individuals, couples, families, and groups work through their struggles and live more joyful and rewarding lives. Some of our areas of practice include:

Journey To Joy

Individual Counseling/Psychotherapy

“We don’t have to do all of it alone. We were never meant to.” ―Brené Brown, Rising Strong

Individual Counseling/PsychotherapyLife can be hard sometimes. Everyone has periods of struggle in their lives; it is part of the human experience. We may be going through a transitional time, experiencing a period of loss, or being triggered by experiences in our past. Sometimes it’s just the daily grind that gets to us. Our therapists utilizes an eclectic, personalized approach to treating the individual. When you are experiencing struggles in life, as we all do, it is helpful to receive support and guidance from a skilled professional. Our therapists are well-trained in a variety of areas including cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, meditation, EMDR, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), client-centered therapy, solution-focused therapy, compassion fatigue, neuroscience, and more. Our compassionate and empathetic approach can gently support and guide you through your difficulties. We specializes in issues related to anxiety/depression, parenting/child issues, grief and loss, life transitions, and manifesting a life you love, among others.

Relationship/Couples Counseling

“You don’t develop courage by being happy in your relationships everyday. You develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity.” ― Epicurus

Relationship/Couples CounselingRelationships are a part of life, but we all enter relationships with unspoken expectations as well as our insecurities and histories. Navigating relationships can be challenging at times. Our therapists take a solution-focused approach to treating couples, making each person feel heard and understood, helping you and your loved one(s) strengthen your bonds of love, trust, responsiveness, and safe connection.

Parental Support

“Parenting is the most important thing to many of us, and so it is also the place we’re most vulnerable. We’re all a little afraid we’re doing it wrong.” ― Glennon Doyle

Parental Support We work with many parents who are struggling with concerns or difficulties with their children. The connection between a parent and child is so strong that when a child is struggling, it is painful for parents as well. You may have heard the saying that, “you are only as happy as your least happy child,” and this certainly seems to be true. We feel our children’s pain and hurt along with them. We long to see our children happy and succeeding in life. Sometimes, even after their struggles are over, we continue to feel hurt for what they have gone through. In fact, children may move on more quickly than we do. Also, it can be very difficult at times to get the support you need from the school system. Schools don’t always understand the unique personalities of some children and their struggles can get categorized and/or given a label that doesn’t quite fit. This can lead to confusion and frustration for the parent and child. Children’s problems are not “one size fits all.” Our therapists can help parents feel that someone finally “gets it” and can support and guide them through the struggles.

Child/Adolescent Issues

“I continue to believe that if children are given the necessary tools to succeed, they will succeed beyond their wildest dreams!” ― David Vitter

Child/Adolescent Issues Our therapists work with older children and adolescents to help them cope with the struggles they face. We help children develop a toolbox of skills and strategies to allow them to navigate this often confusing and overwhelming world. We also invite parents and other family (or non-family) members into the therapy if needed, treating the child within the family system to facilitate change.

Life Coaching

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ― Lao Tzu

life CoachingSome people are looking for more straightforward guidance and accountability to help them reach particular goals in their personal or professional lives. Our counselor, Susan Goryeb Simms, is skilled at motivating and guiding individuals to navigate past any obstacles that come their way so they can finally manifest what they desire. Life coaching includes face-to-face appointments as well as text, phone and skype check-ins and follow-ups to help you stay on track.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

eft-emotional-freedom-techniqueEMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.  When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound.  If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes.  The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health.  If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.

Mindfulness and Meditation

“Meditation is the only intentional, systematic human activity which at the bottom is about not trying to improve yourself or get anywhere else, but simply to realize where you already are.” ― Jon Kabat-Zinn

mindfulness-meditationMany of our therapists are practitioners of mindfulness and meditation, and teach clients how to incorporate these practices in their own lives. We feel strongly about the power of the moment. The ability to be mindful and appreciate any given moment can allow each person to lead a more joyful life.

Testimonials

I came to Susan after a referral from my Employee Assistance Program. My expectations were pretty high, since the EAP counselor spoke so highly of her. Susan put me at ease right away. I felt like she really cared! Her office and waiting room feel warm and inviting. She has been so great to work with. Susan helped me get through a very difficult time and I highly recommend her to anyone.

After being in therapy with many different therapists over the years, I found Susan after being referred by a friend. I immediately felt comfortable with her and I could tell that I finally found someone who could give me the support and guidance I needed. Susan has a much more approachable style that the other therapists I’ve seen and  has really helped me to refocus my life in a positive direction. I am so grateful I found Susan and I have referred her to so many of my friends who have also had wonderful experiences with her.

Been seeing Susan for just a short time, but already I’m feeling her “magic!” Not only do I feel like a huge weight has been lifted, but this warm, sweet, insightful woman has given me the tools to get through all that ails me.

I am so grateful that we found Susan. She has been a valuable resource to us and a huge comfort to our daughter. She is patient and understanding and is working hard to help our daughter learn skills that will help her thrive and excell through her social challenges. Susan is not a therapist on autopilot, she cares about her patients and is constantly thinking of ways to help them.

Susan has been a life changing force for me. I have spent my entire life, forty-something years dealing with anxiety, panic-disorder and depression. I have been to multiple therapists throughout this time, trying to get to the root cause of these things, to no avail. Susan is different. During the two years I have been working with her, she has served as a catalyst for positive change. She is helping me find and heal the root of my emotional pain, and the reasons for repetitive behaviors in relationships that have continued to cause me pain. In addition, she has an uncanny knack for knowing what I need and where to go for it. I have a hard-time calling her a therapist, because she is far more than that. Susan is the perfect person to help you take a good hard look hard at yourself to find your truth with a counselor who will support you, guide you and care for you through the process. I don’t know how I was so fortunate to find someone like this. The biggest issue I am facing these days is feeling so amazing, I need to search for other things she can help me with. I am living my life in ways I never imagined possible two years ago.

Positive Therapy 4 U
Timeline photosSurrender. Let go. Have faith. So much of our suffering is because of our inability to do these three things. As we accept the present moment without judgement we relax into it. When we let go of the past we allow ourselves to move forward, away from being stuck and stagnant And as we have faith in the future, trusting that all will be well, we release our need to control. In doing this we feel calmer, more positive and even more confident. Ironically, we begin to feel more in control of our lives as we relinquish control. ~ 💜 Susan ... See MoreSee Less

Positive Therapy 4 U
Timeline photosTrustI have talked to many of my friends and clients about the topic of trust or faith in a better tomorrow. This is easy to do when you are in a good place and life is going your way, but how do you maintain a feeling of stability during times of adversity? When you have a sick child or you lose your job or your husband walks out...How can we feel safe and protected during times like these? The answer is not a simple one. Trusting that things will work out and believing that you are strong enough to handle these times is the clear answer, but it can be so hard during these difficult times. I try to remind these people that I care about of just how strong they are. I remind them of what they have endured before and I let them know that I trust them to have the strength to get through. I remind them of the gifts of previous times like this. How there was always a silver lining. I tell them what I tell myself during times like that, "There is a light at the end of this tunnel" and I encourage them to trust that it's coming. I tell them to imagine the outcome they are hoping for. To picture that light at the end of the tunnel and feel the sense of relief and joy when they get there. I tell them to live in that place for a little while every day...feeling how good it feels to get that great news, to land the next job, to hear that your child will be okay...I ask them and myself to do this work every day to maintain a sense of peace when it feels like the world is crumbling around you. A few minutes every day of peace. We all deserve that, don't we? It feels so good to be in that place that for many this builds to twice a day or more and the feeling in between those times begins to brighten. Try this for yourself. You will notice that things start getting better in your life little by little. Or sometimes all at once. And as that happens your trust builds. Try it and see what happens, you have nothing to lose ~ 💜 Susan ... See MoreSee Less
